September 5, 2024 Did you know that there is a virtual meeting each month where managers, board members and insurance professionals gather to discuss the current state of the insurance market for common interest developments in California? They talk about current trends, share stories about their experiences, and talk about how we can better advocate for our industry. I’m about to throw a whole bunch of acronyms at you, so buckle up… As a result of the alarming trends in the insurance market, specifically in relation to common interest developments (CIDs) in California, the California Legislative Action Committee (CLAC) for Community Associations Institute (CAI) supercharged their Insurance Task Force in 2021. Once word got out that help on the task force was needed, dozens of people asked to be involved. Since membership on the task force was restricted to existing members of CAI chapter legislative support committees (LSCs), the California Insurance Discussion Group was created to encourage involvement of volunteers outside of the chapter LSCs. (I told you it was a lot of acronyms!) The discussion group and other stakeholders impacted by this insurance crisis have provided hundreds of examples of unsustainable premium increases which we have shared with the Department of Insurance (DOI – I guess I’m not done with the acronyms). They also created a simple three-step process for folks to get involved. You can see it here: CLAC Insurance Crisis. If you would like to participate in the discussion group, shoot me an email at terri@berginsurance.com and I’ll get you signed up. Terri Guest, CIRMS, CMCA, (CA License #0F92313) is the Director of Client Experience & Education for Berg Insurance Agency in partnership with LaBarre/Oksnee and can be reached at Terri@berginsurance.com. Have an insurance question? Ask Terri and your question may be the subject of next month’s edition of Coverage Corner! If your question is picked, you will win a gift card!
